Legionary 2012

A quick call out for my local annual wargamming show, Legionary 2012. If you are down in Devon for the Bank Holiday weekend, why not pop in.

Legionary Show 2012

Exeter Legionary 2012 – or MMXII if you prefer – is this Saturday, May the 5th.
We have twenty wargames traders  – new faces and old – selling historical, fantasy and sci fi figures, rules, terrain and accessories; twenty demonstration or participation games ranging from 422BC to manga-inspried sci fi; tournaments for Warhammer and something out of the ordinary to test your skills in Warhammer 40K; a Pathfinder Society scenario for the roleplayers; and the usual huge and busy bring and buy.  So if you want to buy, sell, play or just look at wargames on May 5th 2012 there’s no better place in England.  Entry to the show itself is £3, doors open to the public at 10:00.

I will be there with my Empire Army, so pop over and say hello if you are around.

Legionary 2011: Photos of the show and demo games

This Saturday saw gamers throughout the south west of England swoop down to Exeter for Legionary 2011; a combined show and tournament. Numbers through the door far exceeded expectations as hobbyists sought out the large number of traders and games that were available.

All considered it was a great day.

The traders included:

Angel Barracks
Baker Company
Black Scorpion
Dreamholme Scenics
Grubby Tanks
Heroes of the Dark Age
Ironclad Miniatures
Lesley’s Bits Box
KR Games
KR Multicase
Plastic Soldier Company
Reid wargames
Space Vixens from Mars
The Square

Special thanks must go to Lesleys bits box who went "above and beyond" when helping out with prize support.

The bring and buy sale was bustling with activity, but I never saw if a massive space ship complete with working lights ever went. At £30 it looked a bargin, I just could not think how I would ever use it!

Demonstration games included the likes of...

Abbeywood Irregulars – 1938 – Very British Civil War
Cornwall Wargames Association – 479BC Plataea
Devon Wargames – Battle of Le Mesnil Patry
Escape Committee (Burnham on Sea) – Napoleonic Skirmish – Song of Drums and Shakos
Exeter Inquisition – Infinity (a high-tech 28mm SF skirmish game)
Exeter Inquisition – 40k Zombie Apocalypse Kill Team
Exmouth Imperials - Napoleonic Plastic Heresy
Gary Mitchell – Space Vixens from Mars
GCN Cornwall - Relics Tor gaming
Ironclad Miniatures demo game – Grubs!
Mos Isca – Flames of War – Push inland from Anzio
Nik Harwood – Blitzkrieg Commander in 10mm - USMC v Japanese
Nik Harwood – Cold War Commander in 3mm
Plymouth wargames - A very british civil war
North Cornwall Beasts and Bionics – Iron Kingdoms Press Ganger games
Portbury Knights – Spears’ Run – Band of Brothers refight
Ryga’s Roughnecks - The End is Nigh (Zombie survival game)
St Austell Wargames Club – Modern day pirates.
Trelawny’s Armies Gaming Society – Secrets of the Third Reich
Tus a’n Orlewen – Somewhere along the Mississippi

The demonstration boards were generally of a very high standard and I could not resist but take photos of a few. Hope you enjoy the pictures and if I can remember which is which I will add some captions.

See if you can spot a white drink cup in each shot!

Tournament ready and still 24 hours to go!

This Saturday see's gamers from across the south western UK heading down to Exeter Legionary, the annual convention largely organised by Rygas Roughnecks and Exmouth Imperials. This year the event is being held at a new and much better venue at the Exeter Matford Center, the event open its doors at 10am and closes once more for another year at 4pm. Tickets are a mere £3.00 on the door, with the usual demo games, trade stands and of course the excellent bring and buy. Three tournaments are also taking part, 40k, WFB and Warmachine - there are still a few tickets left for these, so if that floats your boat I'd get on down to the website now.

I have been working very hard over the last three weeks assembling and painting from scratch a 1500 point Skaven army for the Warhammer fantasy tournament. Amazingly I have actually managed to finish with 24 hours to spare. Which, I guess, means I started a day too early!

As said a coupe of days ago, I have not had a lot of time to blog in this last week, so my normal WIP shots have been missing. I plan to load these up over the next couple of weeks so you can have a good look at the guys. However, in the meantime, here are a couple of overall shots to let you see how they look all together.

When life was getting easy, I took a step into the impossible!

Sorry no pictures today, but read on and you will know why...

Today marks three weeks until the Legionary show/tournament where I have entered into the Warhammer tourni. So it seemed like a good time to think about the army list I would like to take.

After some thought I have decided to go for Skaven, even though I don't actually have any painted figures yet. i have access to the figures from two Island of Blood box sets, so I need the incentive to paint them. So never afraid of a challenge here we go.....

The challenge is to paint a 1500 point Skaven army to a good standard in 21 days.

I spent a good few hours last night working on what I hope will be a competitive army list. As a long time Empire player, I am used to large blocks of infantry. I love cannons and it would be nice to have something like a steam tank.

So the list I have come up with is...
39 Clanrats with full command, handweapons & shields and a poisoned wind team
39 Clanrats with full command, spears & shields and a doom flayer team
2 warp lightning cannons
Doomwheel
two lots of 5 Gutter runners with slings and poisoned attacks
Grey seer with power stone & skalm
Battle standard with enchanted shield and 4+ ward talisman.
Chiefton with Halberd.

Any comments would be appreciated, after all I have never played Skaven!

So 96 models in 21 days! That is only 5 a day!!!! Here goes..

Legionary 2011: Preparation continues

My local club co-hosts an annual tournament and show (called Legionary 2011) in Exeter (UK) each year and this year it is taking place on May 7th. So preparations are well progressed...

and demonstration games such as...

Abbeywood Irregulars – 1938 – Very British Civil War

Escape Committee (Burnham on Sea) – Napoleonic Skirmish – Song of Drums and Shakos
Exeter Inquisition – Infinity (a high-tech 28mm SF skirmish game)
Exeter Inquisition – 40k Zombie Apocalypse Kill Team
Exmouth Imperials - Napoleonic Plastic Heresy
Gary Mitchell – Space Vixens from Mars
Ironclad Miniatures demo game – Grubs!
Mos Isca – Flames of War – Push inland from Anzio

Nik Harwood – Blitzkrieg Commander in 10mm - USMC v Japanese
Nik Harwood – Cold War Commander in 3mm
North Cornwall Beasts and Bionics – Iron Kingdoms Press Ganger games
Portbury Knights – Spears’ Run – Band of Brothers refight

Tus a’n Orlewen – Somewhere along the Mississippi

We also are hosting three tournaments; 1500 point 40k and Warhammer fantasy and 35 point Warmachine/Hordes.

Although between the two clubs we have loads of gaming tables, a descision was taken that we will need even more for the tournaments and so I got the task of banging some together. We decided we could do with around 40 odd 4' x 2' boards (3 together make 6' x 4').

So I brought 10 sheets of 8' x 4', and marked them out...

Spent a happy our or two cutting them up (under supervision of the cat)...

Gave them two coats of nice green paint.

There we go 40 boards to fill up my back room!

Looking forward to the tournament!

WFB 8 scenery: a Geeks guide

What follows is an exploration in the "Average" scenery that would be required on a Warhammer fantasy table. I found the results surprising so I have written about them....

I hope that this is of interest and of use to you...

My wargame club hosts a wargame tournament once a year in Exeter. At the tournament we normally host 24 players for each of the WFB and WH 40k games systems and this year we will include a 32 man Warmachine / Hordes tournament.

With the advent of the 8th edition of warhammer we have revisited our scenery and set about making new as required. So we had a chat last meeting about the progress that we have made and what we need to do next. So a Saturday morning comes and it is time to test my knowledge of statistics and work out just what we should be making.

I know that we need 12 tables decorated up for WFB, so I set about thinking what would be generated if we just left it to the rules in the book. The book requires D6+4 items of terrain. This means that we would need an average of 71/2 items of terrain per table. The terrain is generated by rolling 2D6 and looking up a table.

Therefore it is possible to calculate what number of each type of scenery would be generated on an average day...

The results of my maths are shown in the following table; The table lists the percentage chances of at least one item of this scenery appearing on each table and therefore the number I would expect to appear on 12 tables..

which gives the following distribution of scenery; what do you think? Is this what you expected?

This is a lot of scenery to make, and is a lot different to our normal set up of two hills, one wood and a building...
