Victorian zombie ladies of the street - why not!

The 2nd edition of Malifaux is fast approaching on the horizon, so I thought it was time to present for your viewing pleasure, my own 1st edition force. What attracted me to Malifaux is the bizarre and highly creative world that the game is set in...

To borrow the wording from Wyrd miniatures own site "Based in an alternate Earth, Malifaux uses gothic, steampunk, Victorian horror with a dose of the wild west to inject fun and depth into the magical lawlessness of a world rife with monsters, necropunks, man-machine hybrids, gunslingers, and power-hungry politicos"

The game is a skirmish type game using 32mm miniatures and with factions that include the undead, a "Guild" of human mercenaries, Victorian Magic users, Creatures born in children's nightmares and other crazies far more twisted all set in a semi steampunk victorian wild west.

What is more the game uses no dice, just a set of gaming cards..

I couldn't avoid getting involved and elected to get hold of a Resurrectionists gang. Those that know me will not be suprised that I built around a "Jack the Ripper" type character and his troupe of undead zombie ladies of the night.

The first figures I painted were the afore mentioned Rotten Belles.

These girls come in three poses and I brought two packs. I therefore elected to modify some to make them all look a bit different..

The blue yellow and green ladies are painted as they come from the box. I have kept to a single colour scheme for each girl to simplify game play. Much easier to talk about a blue lady than say "that one there" (whilst pointing wildly).

The second group of three girls have been converted.

The brown lady started life as the same model as the blue lady. I have removed her brolly and slightly straightened her arm.

The grey lady was the same as the green lady, but I have removed her fur shawl, and have bent her arm across her as far as I thought I could get away with. I have also twisted her leg slightly to have her stepping off a kerb. After all she is a street walker...

The lady in Red started as the Yellow lady. I have brought her arm in closer to her body and I have taken her brolly and replaced it with a more aggressive weapon.

In my usual style, here are the pictures of the pretty ladies, but from the back...

Hope you enjoy.

(Otherworld) zombies return!

Zombies, what is not to love; and recently I managed to lay my hands on some pretty cute ones. These are zombies from the otherworld miniatures collection. They produce figures for the role-player mainly and some of the best skeletons out there. The zombies I could not resist.

These first three are nicely conventional human zombies. I have retained my standard zombie colour collection of brown, green and dirty white. I have used this colour combination on all my zombies because this helps create a unified feel to the unit. I like the contorted faces, but I especially like the trousers of the guy on the right which are at half mast.

and again from the back...

This second three are from their demi-human collection. From left to right they represent elf, dwarf and halfling zombies. Pretty cool yes! fun to paint, once I worked out what each part of the mold represented. I found the dwarf zombie most difficult to work out.

Hope you enjoy!

Otherworld Zombies

I have managed to lay my hands on a collection of interesting zombies from Otherworld Miniatures. These guys appear to gear themselves to the roleplay market, but that does not mean you cannot use their figures for other games.

The first three that I have based are a selection of multi racial zombies. By this I mean I have a Halfling zombie, a dwarf zombie and and elf zombie.

The remaining three are more conventional human villager zombies. They are quite nicely done, the flash is pronounced in places and it is a tad difficult to work out what is flesh and what is clothing, especially on the dwarf.

Having said all that, they are a nice mix and I LOVE zombies. Expect to see them painted and posted in a week!

A little bretonnian zombie gathering

I have a little zombie collection for my Vampire Counts army, but I thought that they could do with a little addition from the Bretonnian army...

I took some Bretonnian peasant bowmen and added some basic zombie bits. The conversion was very very simple, but keeps the same zombie look as the remainder of my zombie horde.
To help them all appear as a single horde I have kept with the same three basic colours as the other zombies. These are green, brown and cream. I hope they look OK.

Week 19: Zombie mini-horde

Whilst I appreciate that zombies are supposed to travel around in massive packs, everyone has to start somewhere. I have started by own zombie horde with a modest collection of 10 zombies. Even the most generous person would be stretching a point to call 10 a horde, but these are the first ever zombies I have painted so please give me a little latitude.

These guys are a mixture of empire militia and zombie models. I opted to go for grey as a skin colour because I thought that this would give me the most contrast and in my own head I thought it would look the least like they were still alive. I wanted a fairly uniform look to the clothing and so decided to try and limit this to three colours only; cream, green and a muddy brown. I hoped that this might unite the figures even though I am going to try for lots of different figure shapes to make them look less like a ranked unit and more like a rough mass of bodies.

The problem is that looking back at the figures they look a little too happy and cheerful. I think it is the cream colour that does this. In hindsight a dark blue or red would have done better. Oh well, you live and learn (or not if you are zombies).

As is normal I have combined figures onto bases to make setting up easier. I couldn't decide what to do with the eyes. I wanted them to have no life whatsoever, and so have gone forward with a dark circle, but I may go make and give them actual eyes in the future.

WIP: A Zombie shambles

I cannot put it off any longer. I need to knock together about 50 (ish) zombies for two lists. I have been putting them off for a while because I am not a fan of the figures that GW have and was hoping for some kind of inspiration.

Its fair to say that that spark of Genius never came, so its out with the plastic glue and a short time later 10 zombies are on the shelf ready for painting.

I have used combined bases as much as possible because it will make placement and casualty removal easier. The four chaps above are on a base from the Bretonnian peasant archers set. Whilst the chaps below are just on a pair of bases glued to the same magnetic strip.

I have used a combination of zombie and empire militia sprues to make the figures, but this is where some of my problems have arisen. I was very much aware of the oversize hand issue with the zombie parts. What I was not aware of was just how much bigger the empire figures are than the zombies. If you try to put a empire torso on a zombie pair of legs, do it with caution, it might look a little daft. Hence the fact that I took the legs back off one guy to make him look a little better.
